What Size Mini Storage Unit Do You Need?

If you are downsizing or moving to a smaller place, you may want to put some of your belongings in a mini storage unit. Mini storage units are great when you don't have time to sort your things before you move. They're also great when you must move to a smaller place but don't want to get rid of all your stuff. However, be sure you get the right size unit before you sign your mini storage rental contract.

Below are some descriptions of some common mini storage unit sizes. Keep in mind that all these sizes may not be available at your location, or they may have slightly different sizes. Very small or exceptionally large spaces may also be available.

5 Feet by 5 Feet

For most storage centers, this is often the smallest size available. Think of this as being about the size of a walk-in closet. This space is ideal for storing extra boxes of paper, clothing, books, and other small items. You may be able to fit small chairs and end tables as well.

5 Feet by 10 Feet

For many people, this size would be ideal if you want to store the contents of a small room. For example, if you were downsizing from a one-bedroom to a studio but don't want to discard all your furniture, you should be able to fit a disassembled bed, end tables, sofa, and storage boxes.

10 Feet by 10 Feet

This size is good if you need enough space to store furniture and appliances from a larger apartment, a small condominium, or a mobile home. It's also a good size for a motorcycle, jet ski, or a small trailer.

10 Feet by 20 Feet

This size is similar to a one-car garage. You should be able to store the contents of an average-sized home, including appliances. If you want to store a vehicle, check with the mini storage facility manager. They may have a vehicle-specific storage area.

10 Feet by 30 Feet

10 feet by 30 feet (or 10 feet by 25 feet) is usually the largest indoor storage size at a mini storage facility. These units are ideal for storing the contents of a large home or medium-sized business.

One way to know what size storage you need is to gather your items and measure the pile. However, that may not be possible in all cases. Another way to get an idea of what size you need is to ask other people who have the same size unit. Also, make sure you get a view of the unit and the storage conditions to see if it's suitable for you. Contact your mini storage center manager for more details.
